I won’t mess around – It has been an amazing weekend for the Atoms – Following on from the SMOKA game against Lakers on Saturday we had the following results this afternoon.
Atoms 2 17 – 8 Oxford City 2
Atoms 1 22 – 3 Didcot 1
Atoms 3 12 – 11 Didcot 2
Starting with Atoms 2 17 – 8 Oxford City 2. This game was much closer than the scoreline suggests – City leading up to half-time in what could be the battle for the league this year. Atoms had lost to City 2 in their previous encounter this year too.
In the Abingdon just had too many goal scorers on the pitch. Tayebeh, Andrew, Gorka, Damien, Rich and Juan-Miguel all scored at least 2 – at least 6 of the goals coming in the last 15 minutes as our ‘fitness’ shone through.
The Atoms 1 22 – 3 Didcot 1 game was never as close, Abingdon had a couple of regulars missing, but still raced into a 7-1 lead after about 10 minutes, Susie, Alex girl and Andrew scoring a few.
And on the Atoms machine went, the defence only letting in 3 probably as impressive as scoring 22 against a Didcot team who scored 17 against the league leaders just two weeks ago.
Special mention to Gorka who put his recent poor scoring recored behind him by scoring 6. Nearly all drop-off shots at the back, lovely stuff.
The closest game of the weekend was always going to be Atoms 3 12 – 11 Didcot 2
Abingdon were 1 or 2 behind throughout, and just got their noses in front after some consistent scoring for new dad Nigel (3 goals) with 10 minutes left, only to be hauled back once again to 11-11 with not long left. Some superb work from Professor Tyler (as he is formally known) fed a running in-shot for Shirlaine who scored it without looking as though she was under pressure at all.
Atoms 2 go back to the top of division 2, and Atoms 3 are up to 4th in the same league.
Overall a grand weekend for all, fine spectating by team Rogers and team Tyler – a total of 69 goals scored and for the first time in the history of korfball teams called Atoms 4 wins out of 4. Literally a Berylliumt weekend. I’ll hand the puns back to Matt I think.
