Abingdon Atoms (1) 17 – 13 Basingstoke Bulls (1)

Toughest challenge of the season so far for top of the table Atoms 1.  And thanks to Susie’s nasty knee and a game of American Rugby keeping Bhairavi and Matt ‘Mr Commitment’ Buckley away from the St Greg’s Megadome the Atoms 1 were bolstered by Andrew, Chrissie and Tayebeh.

A slow start for both teams and we were at 3-3 after about 15 minutes.  Basingstoke really put the pressure on at this point and took a 5-3 lead, but that was as good as it got for them, the Atoms scored the next 3 (thanks to some strong attacking intent from Damien forcing a penalty for the girl to convert) and never looked back.

Sadly, Basingstoke tired in the second half, they’d already had to play Uni today and the Atoms pushed on, taking a 4-goal lead early in the second-half thanks to goals from Andrew, Chrissie and Baerbel.  A little more tit-for-tat later and it was all over, a controlled performance from the Atoms, with some occasionally frantic last-minute defending.

Four wins from four for top of the table Atoms, but the challenges keep coming in the most competitive league for years.  Unbeaten Southampton Uni up next week.
